TRADITIONAL FUNERAL RITUALS OF THE NORTH CAUCASUS MOUNTAIN JEWS

Abstract. The article examines the traditional funeral rituals of the North Caucasus Mountain Jews. The funeral and memorial cycle is the most conservative element of social and family life and studying the rituals of this cycle allows identifying and clarifying different aspects of the traditional "Juhuri" (Mountain Jews) culture. Analyzing the Mountain Jews’ funeral rites, which are based mainly on traditional rituals combining the relicts of pagan beliefs and Judaism’s prescriptions the paper focuses on the changes that have occurred in the last years. According to the author, funeral and memorial rites still hold an important place in the Mountain Jews’ social life.
