Abstract. The article identifies three types of language: human, animal and cybernetic ones. The author distinguishes between the concepts of symbol and sign, proves that symbolic language is characteristic only for the human level of existence. The paper traces relation between consciousness and symbolic language and between symbolic language and the social activity of a subject. The researcher concludes on the social nature of consciousness and argues that animals don’t have consciousness.
