Abstract. The article examines the archetype of motherhood personified in the images of Satanei and Satanaya - the central personages of the Adyghe and Karachay-Balkarian epos. The material under study representing not only the specifics of the myth-poetical spatial-temporal model but also the subsequent chronotopes indicated that Satanei-guashi and Satanaya images are not only archaic but also dynamic and polysemantic. Their maternal element has undergone evolution from "virgin" mother to traditional one. Contrary to the majority of other researchers the author argues for the ambivalent nature of the maternal element thus rejecting its excessive idealization. The paper traces the evolution of the opposition "mother - child".
