Abstract. The article undertakes an attempt to analyze the formation of the private museums and galleries of Barnaul at the turn of the XX-XXI centuries. The author considers the activity of private museums in the context of the historical and social-cultural development of the region. The museum as one of the objects of culture represents the cultural realia of a particular historical period and at the same time characterizes the means of the formation of the cultural traditions and historical heritage of humanity. The specifics of the examples given by the author on the organization of the historical and cultural landscape of the Altai territory is manifested in the private initiative of the creative people (artists, patrons of art, gallerists) as an adaptation of the economic methods of the preservation of fine and applied art. Particular attention is paid to the formation of stable interest to private museum collections, which concentrate the cognitive and aesthetic attitude of the modern consumer.
