Abstract. The article is devoted to one of the important historical symbols of Tatar culture. The paper examines the role and meaning of a horse in Tatar life in different historical epochs - from the ancient Turkic people up to now. The authors analyze the economic activity, religious practices, image of a horse in the folklore and mythology of the Tatar people over the whole period of their historical development. Historical, lexicographical and ethnographical materials served as sources of the research.
