Abstract. The article discusses the Japanese nuclear programme, in particular - the possibility to create nuclear weapons. The author examines different historical periods and focuses on the crucial points in history capable to serve as a motive for launching the atomic military programme. The paper also analyzes the modern developmental stage of Japanese nuclear industry, which began after the accident at the atomic station "Fukushima-1". The works of both Russian and foreign researchers are used as a source base.
