Abstract. The article illustrates the history of the creation of church societies and archives under them. Special attention is paid to Simbirsk regional component. For the first time the history of the appearance, development and stocking of the collection of Simbirsk Church Archives is examined, the functions of the Archives are revealed. The documents of the State Archive of Ulyanovsk Region and the journalistic material of the period under consideration are introduced into scientific use. On the basis of the presented study the author comes to the conclusion that the Church Archives of Simbirsk were a church museum.
