Abstract. The article considers the phenomenon of social memory in the context of the problem of ensuring social institutions legitimation. The author emphasizes dialectical nature of interaction between the individual and the society, as well as the need for transfer of social experience, which is impossible without availability of relevant social recollections. Social memory is described via the processes of treatment and adoption of the past, and also its later reproduction and consolidation in activity necessary to maintain social institutions viability.
