Abstract. The article examines activity of the Commission for Special Artillery Experiments to create new mortar samples for The Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army in the 1920s. The paper is based on archival materials from the funds of the scientific archive of the Military Historical Museum of Artillery, Engineers and Signal Corps (Saint Petersburg). Analyzing the process of modernization and construction of new samples of short-range artillery the authors show contribution of scientists and Petrograd-Leningrad industrial enterprises to formation of the Soviet Armed Forces in the initial period of their history after the Civil War.
