Abstract. The article analyzes emergence of the theory of "language games". Special attention is paid to the author of the term, the Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, who actually gave language its own substantiality and, therefore, independent of the subject functioning. Thus, language, which had been understood in the ancient time as a tool that a man can master and use on his/her own, was reinterpreted and comprehended as a self-acting force, and the result of this was recognition of the active role of language in mental processes.
Key words and phrases: язык, языковая игра, мышление, ментальные процессы, "призраки" познания, Витгенштейн, language, language game, thinking, mental processes, "phantoms" of cognition, Wittgenstein
