CORPORAL AND MYTHOLOGICAL IN THE AINU FOLK MUSICAL INSTRUMENT TONKORI

Abstract. The article for the first time examines the functioning of tonkori - the indigenous Ainu people’s musical instrument - from the philosophical and culturological viewpoint. The author tries to justify the thesis on the tonkori corporal nature and its mythological roots. As examples the paper provides the names of the instrument’s elements consonant with the human body parts names and Ainu legends explaining the origin, functioning and death of tonkori as a living being that allows the author to conclude on multi-level relationship between a human being and the musical instrument.
