Abstract. This article describes the experience of students involvement in research activity within the framework of graduation design. The main objective of students of the training direction "Design" was to study the heritage of the town of Biisk, namely to determine the opportunities of the modern functioning of the architecture of the XIX - the early XX century. The research results are embodied in design projects aimed at preserving the cultural tradition in the modern building of the town of Biisk, one of unique historical and cultural centers of Siberia.
