NOTION OF IDENTITY AND ITS ESSENCE- AND CHARACTER-RELATED CONSTANTS

Abstract. The purpose of the article is to study the notion "identity" through the evolutionist paradigm and to determine the degree of historical events and social structures impact at the level of identity. The definition of identity not as a psychological or social phenomenon but as a modus of human existence is examined from the standpoint of the psychosocial approach by E. Erikson and symbolic interactionism by George Mead. In conclusion it is suggested to consider identity as an existential phenomenon, which includes such important features of human existence as fortuity and finiteness.
