Abstract. The article deals with the results of the socio-philosophical analysis of the main conceptions considering the essence of needs, their classification and role in the structure of activity. A special category is ethnic needs connected with ethnic identity of interaction subjects. In accordance with the formation approach, ethnic needs are to be satisfied in all the spheres of life activity of an ethnic formation that suggests their classification in political, economic and spiritual spheres.
