Abstract. Basing on the materials of Karelia of the 1930s the author shows the significance of amateur performances as a form of collective creative activity contributing to the preservation and study of folk culture, the formation of new identities, and the translation of official ideology. The politicization of artistic sphere, the lack of art workers’ professionalism provoked formalism, working by fits and starts, but in general the development of amateur performances contributed to creative self-realization, the cultivation of aesthetic taste, enriched the leisure of the participants of this movement.
