Abstract. The article examines Voronezh province residents’ religious customs, traditions and superstitions of the second half of the XIX - the beginning of the XX century. Though the majority of the Central Black Earth region’s peasant population professed Orthodoxy, ignorance and prevalent illiteracy among the peasantry promoted the adoption of a large number of prejudices and superstitions. On the basis of historical sources the paper analyzes the peculiarities of Voronezh province residents’ religious prejudices and superstitions in the post-reform period of Russian history.
