Abstract. The article examines the developmental history of the social and political movement of the indigenous peoples residing in the north-eastern regions of Russia. The author identifies the basic motives and backgrounds for the creation of ethnic associations aimed to protect the rights, culture and traditional lifestyle of northern aborigines, analyzes the basic stages of the indigenous peoples’ ethnic development through the lenses of historical events that occurred in the country during the whole XX century. The paper evaluates the role and importance of the Russian North-East indigenous peoples’ social movement and its relations with the authorities.
