Abstract. The article is devoted to the fundamental philosophical writing by Jean-Paul Sartre "Being and Nothingness". The author focuses on analyzing the introduction to the book with a view to show how Sartre formulates the key issues, what purposes he tries to achieve and what problems he inevitably comes across when addressing the issues under discussion. It is pointed out that before introducing one of the key concepts of the mentioned work - "nothingness" - Sartre, in the introduction, specifies the concept usage so as to create the necessary meaning of the concept when answering the question where "nothingness" comes from.
