Abstract. Mass (popular) music is one of the main cultural manifestations of society. The paper presents its characteristics; the peculiarities of the genre are revealed; the theory of cultural industry is analyzed. Special attention is paid to the classical crossover as one of the styles of popular music. The author gives a generalized definition of the term, points at its distinctive features and analyses the functions and impact on society as a whole.
