Abstract. The article considers the issue about the place and role of the Socialist Party of Portugal in the modern political system of the state, and evaluates problems facing the party in the situation of the continuing financial crisis in the country. The author comes to the conclusion about favorable prospects for the party to play the leading role in the social-political life of Portugal, in particular after the immediate parliamentary and presidential elections.
