Abstract. The problems of traditional social institutions take an important place in historical science. The description of laws and customs promotes the more detailed reconstruction of the traditional history of highland peoples, the regularities of the development of the North Caucasus. In this connection the author analyzes the institution of blood feud with the Adyghe people, which existed for a long period. By concrete historical material the paper examines the practice of blood feud in the XVIII-XIX centuries and the problem of its transformation.
