Abstract. The article gives the analysis of the geopolitical subjectness of Japan from 1868 up to our day. The notion of "geopolitical subjectness" is disclosed presenting the ability of the state to perform significant activity in relation to the occupied territory and neighboring territories. From being a closed country Japan becomes a subject of the world politics spreading its expansion to the territories of Korea and China. In alliance with Great Britain Japan opposes Russia. After the deterioration of relations with the USA Japan refocuses first on Russia, and then on Germany. After defeat in the World War II Japan factually loses its geopolitical subjectness. The author examines how Japan’s geopolitical subjectness changed basing on such fundamental notions of geopolitics as "expansion", "Atlanticism", "Eurasianism" and others.
