Abstract. As a result of the political circumstances of the VI century direct contacts between Aquitaine and the Mediterranean became more and more limited, and Septimania, instead of becoming a bridge between Spain and Gaul, contributed to the isolation of Spain from the rest of the Western world. According to archaeological data, contacts across the Visigoth-Frankish border were reduced to the minimum, which deeply influenced the culture of the border areas. Catholic Church remained the only link for them, and its ministers crossed the border in both ways.
