FORMATION OF THE VISIGOTHS’ POLITEIA IN THE LOWER DANUBE REGION IN THE III-IV CENTURIES

Abstract. The article addresses the problem of the period and reasons of the origin of the Visigoths’ confederation that was headed by "judges" and existed in the Danube region in the IV century, and examines the nature of its potestarian organization. According to the author, the formation of this complex chiefdom at the end of the III century after the Therving Goths resettlement to the Danube region upon the Scythian wars of 238-275 was conditioned not only by internal causes but also by the strong influence of a foreign-policy factor - the interaction of the Goths with Rome within the framework of foedera, which were in force from the end of the III century till the end of the second third of the IV century.
