Abstract. The article is devoted to the problem of the legitimacy of the ruler, who received power as a result of palace coup. Basing on the typology of legitimacy by M. Weber, the paper considers the domestic experience of palace coups, and presents the typology of the legitimacy of those rulers, who led the country after palace coups. The success of palace coups is associated with the presence of the legitimacy of a new ruler. It is emphasized that new rulers had one or another type of legitimacy, or their combination.
