INSTRUCTIONS FOR ESTATE MANAGERS AS SOURCE OF STUDYING PATRIMONIAL ECONOMY (BY THE EXAMPLE OF THE SHEREMETEVS’ PATRIMONIAL ESTATES)

Abstract. The article comprises the analysis of instructions for estate managers that were applied in the Sheremetevs’ patrimonial estates throughout the XVIII-XIX centuries. There are three main stages in the evolution of this document: the first two are the emergence of orders for estate managers in the first quarter of the XVIII century and the heyday of instructions as a special type of document in the second half of the XVIII century. At this time the process of the consolidation of the estate manager’s duties and the basic principles of the patrimonial estate management took place. The third stage of instructions evolution is associated with the beginning of the XIX century, when orders gained its final form and were transformed into a set of rules in the Sheremetevs’ estates. This type of document ceased to exist together with the abolition of serfdom.
