Abstract. By the material of written and archeological sources the article examines the place and role of weapon in the culture of Medieval Rus. Weapon was the most valuable status attribute of a warrior, a sacred meaning was assigned to it. It was a symbol of honour, the guarantor of oath - this applies especially to the sword. After adopting Christianity weapon preserved its old meaning and also acquired a new one - it became an attribute of the defender of faith. As opposed to Western Europe where only the sword was considered to be a privileged weapon, in Rus an important role in military culture was also assigned to the ax.
