Abstract. The article reveals the social-philosophical aspect of the notion and essence of punishment, because its definition is an important part of researching this phenomenon. The paper studies punishment from the standpoint of the correlation of good and evil in it, and also suffering experienced by the guilty. When determining the social essence of punishment the author pays special attention to retribution: considers the definition of this notion, its basic elements, and also solves the problem whether retribution is the essence of punishment or one of its goals.
