Abstract. The article reveals the significance of metaphor for memory analysis. The combination of logical and sensory components in metaphor creates the effect of represented opinions and thus introduces the activity of memory by structurally related objects and processes, especially recording, scroll, books and library. Two different moments are essential in the metaphor of writing; they allow distinguishing, on the one hand, recording substrate, and, on the other hand, activity on the decoding and interpretation of written symbols.
