INTERPRETATION OF THE WEST-EUROPEAN ART IN "THE LETTERS OF THE RUSSIAN TRAVELER" BY N. M. KARAMZIN

Abstract. The article reveals the features of the interpretation of the West-European art in "The Letters of the Russian Traveler" by N. M. Karamzin in terms of such aspects as selection, preference, evaluation and terminology. A comparison of the interpretation of the traveler-writer, in other words an amateur in the sphere of art, and the interpretation of travelers-artists evaluating art from professional positions is conducted. It is concluded that the interpretation of art by "the Russian traveler" is reduced to the descriptions of works of art as the monuments of historic events.
