DECREE OF THE 8 TH OF NOVEMBER 1847 AND PUBLIC REACTION TO IT IN RUSSIA

Abstract. The article is devoted to reaction in Russia to the publication of the decree of November 8, 1847 on the right of serfs to buy their liberty when estates are sold at public auction. On the basis of archival sources used for the first time (in particular, the notes of the state councilor Ya. V. Khanykov) the author defines the positions of landowners, the provincial leaders of the nobility and governors, who were extremely dissatisfied with this act and the prospects of possible peasant reform, and serfs themselves, who hoped for the wider implementation of this decree.
