Abstract. At the beginning of the XX century Dagestan, like the rest of Caucasia, was in the focus of world powers, which were divided into two opposing military-political blocs - the Entente (Britain, France, Russia) and the Triple Alliance (Germany, Italy, Austria-Hungary). Dagestan in the geopolitics of foreign states in Caucasia occupied a special position, because strategically important transport routes (rail and sea) connecting Northern Caucasia and Transcaucasia passed through it, and it attracted justifiable attention from the warring states. The paper undertakes an attempt of the comprehensive and objective study of the complex historical events and phenomena of the period under consideration that influenced the further development of the region.
