INTER-COMMUNAL STRUGGLE IN HISTORICAL SYRIA IN THE LIGHT OF POLITICAL INFLUENCE OF THE WEST (1860-1920)

Abstract. The article analyzes relations between the confessional communities of Historical Syria - the area, which included the territories of several countries in their modern borders. Confessional factor had decisive influence while establishing the mandated state of Greater Lebanon. The factor of external influence and the entwinement of the problems of socio-political sphere with the problems of the interrelations of the ethno-confessional communities of Syria and Lebanon in many ways determine acute social and political processes in the region nowadays.
