Abstract. The article reveals the existence of the idea of the unity of man and nature in the cosmogony of the Mari people, which reflection is quite relevant in the philosophical-cultural rethinking of the progressivist schemes of historical process. The authors prove that the study of the ecological-symbolic ambiguity of adaptive culture ethics, its conceptual and categorical framework within culturological education is an important condition for the breeding of the ecological outlook of today’s youth. These conclusions are based on the study of the correlation of the traditional consciousness of the Mari with its cosmogonic myths and religious texts.
