Abstract. The article describes the role of the Russian military men, who served in the Far East and Central Asia, in expanding the ideas of the Russian society about China of the end of the XIX - the beginning of the XX century. The author mentions the names of the most authoritative researchers, specifies the thematic orientation of their papers. Special attention is paid to describing the image of China represented by military orientalists in the pages of monographs and periodicals. The author provides an analysis of socio-economic and political processes that occurred in China and Russia and influenced the transformation of the image of China.
