Abstract. The article for the first time in domestic musical science considers the methodological bases of intertextual approach to the music of Johannes Brahms. The author proposes to understand intertextuality as a peculiar "key" to the study and interpretation of composer’s intention in the non-program music of the German composer. The paper discusses the problems of terminology and develops the methodological stages of intertextual approach. The researcher concludes that intertextual approach gives opportunities for more subtle penetration into the composer’s intentions.
