Abstract. The article proposes a complementary theory of harmonic functions (in tonal music), the basic characteristics of which is a number of quint steps separating the chord basic tone from the key-note. The functional system based exclusively on the chord quint relations differs from the traditional one (based on quint-tierce relations including the functional satellites Tp , Dp , Sp , Tc , Dc, Sc ) and helps to discover special functional shades usually concealed beyond the habitual concepts of dominant and subdominant. The author proposes a new system of "quint functions" conventional designations and introduces his own theory analyzing a fragment from the Nocturne op. 15 № 3 by F. Chopin.
