Abstract. The article examines various aspects of worshipping natural shrines in the eastern districts of Arkhangelsk region. The author’s analysis and conclusions are based on the field materials gathered during the Northern Russian ethnographic expedition of Lomonosov Moscow State University. The paper explores the genesis of the rituals associated with the honoured water bodies, their functions and distribution within the territories of the region. The studies were conducted in the eastern districts of Arkhangelsk region, in particular, in Leshukonskoe district, which is still insufficiently investigated by ethnologists and folklorists.
