SEMANTICS OF THE TRADITIONAL MARI COSTUME AND SPECIFICS OF ITS MODERN PERCEPTION

Abstract. The article examines the problem of the perception of the Mari costume, which continues functioning in the religious and ritual sphere of the ethnic culture. The author identifies two tendencies of its development: the creation of the replicas of the XIX-XX-century costume or its elements using authentic materials and technologies and simplified versions using available materials. The costume is still perceived by the tradition bearers as a sign system, but the variants of its interpretation differ considerably.
