Abstract. The article analyzes the changes of the ideas about historical past, which is conditioned by the complexity and ambiguity of this category. Gradually accumulated mistrust to the validity of knowledge about the reality of the past in the framework of the traditions of modernism led to the review of its positions by post-modernists, who deny its stability and self-sufficiency. The past isn’t considered as historical reality anymore and is characterized in the terms of "other", "alien". In this connection the problem of the cognition of historical past, the solutions of which are presented in various forms, appears.
