L. N. TOLSTOY IN THE CONTEXT OF RUSSIAN NIETZSCHEANISM: CRITICISM OF "PHILOSOPHY OF BRUTALITY" AND "SUPERHUMAN AESTHETICISM"

Abstract. The article reconstructs the nature of the perception and evaluation of F. Nietzsche’s philosophy by L. N. Tolstoy. The paper considers both the immediate attitude of the Russian writer to the ideas of the German thinker and the definition of his philosophy on the whole as a cultural phenomenon. Tolstoy’s socio-esthetic interpretation of Nietzsche’s idea of superman is under analysis. The authors conclude that for Tolstoy Nietzsche’s ideas exemplify "philosophy of brutality" and their success in the society indicates a deep spiritual crisis of contemporary European culture.
