DECREASE IN POPULATION’S MORTALITY AS A RESULT OF M. S. GORBACHEV’S ANTI-ALCOHOL CAMPAIGN (BY THE EXAMPLE OF UDMURTIA)

Abstract. By the example of Udmurtia the article considers decrease in mortality as a result of the anti-alcohol campaign by M. S. Gorbachev. This happened largely because of significant reduction in the number of alcohol poisonings. In those regions, where the problem of alcoholism was sharper than in Russia in general, positive demographic changes were most noticeable. The impact of the anti-alcohol campaign was manifested very clearly in Udmurtia, where moonshining was widespread on the eve of the campaign. Struggle with it led to the great reduction of mortality in the Republic.
