Abstract. The article deals with the topical issues related to the similarity and difference of the notions "liturgical chant", "church music", "sacred music" in historical and theoretical context. The aim of the work is to identify the essence of each of these concepts, as well as their interaction in different historical epochs. The genre sphere of sacred music is considered both in narrowly specific and wider sense going beyond the scope of church mission and including works on the verge of the field of secular music.
