Abstract. The article examines the category "thing" in its congruence with the philosophical conceptions, which can be called the synonyms of this category, for example, object, subject, element, process, essence. The sequential analysis of the conceptions used in different philosophical systems allows identifying both similarities and differences. Comparing the conceptions clarifies the proper specifics of the category "thing", which does not allow substituting it for any of the synonyms. The research is relevant to revive interest for modern philosophical ontology.
