Abstract. The article presents a conceptual analysis of the category of freedom in liberal discourse. The author justifies an idea that classical philosophy absolutized and rationalized the freedom of an individual as opposed to the traditional Christian conceptions. This resulted in the development of its hypertrophied forms in social practices when freedom acquires negative characteristics in the form of value anomia, estrangement, absolutized individualism and other effects destroying the society.
