Abstract. The article examines the political and territorial structure of a state and its basic elements. Special attention is paid to the survey of the politological element in the conceptions of the territoriality of a state. The paper describes some successive theoretical approaches to the study of borders in geographical and political investigations. The author characterizes the content of each stage, examines new ideas and the basic achievements in limology, introduces the theoretical investigations of the models of the relations "center - periphery" in political space.
