CEUTA AND MELILLA IN MOROCCO-SPAIN RELATIONS (THE 1950S - THE BEGINNING OF THE XXI CENTURY)

Abstract. The article is devoted to the analysis of relations between the states of Spain and Morocco in the context of territorial dispute about the towns of Ceuta and Melilla starting from 1956, when Morocco achieved independence, up to the present time. Spain regards the towns as an integral part of its territory, which has certain strategic, military and economic value, whereas according to Morocco the belonging of Ceuta and Melilla to Spain violates the territorial integrity of the kingdom. Main attention is paid to the arguments of the parties concerning the belonging of the towns starting from 1956.
