Abstract. The article reveals the informational potential and social significance of investigation materials as a historical source. The documents of the Criminal Investigation Department of Tyumen province of 1918-1923 allow broadening the idea about the role of this institution in the prevention of crime, defining the level of the personnel’s skills, evaluating the public importance of their work.
