Abstract. Nowadays the development of modern science makes high demands of the philosophical foundations of science. Among them the gnosiological foundations of science are of special significance, which count for much. The renovation of knowledge in reference to the forms of scientific research is of vital importance here. One of these is a hypothesis. The article presents an original analysis of a scientific hypothesis as an element of theoretical attitude to the world. Innovations are introduced in the classification of scientific hypotheses, their structure and functions. The author investigates and reveals their nature, genesis, essence and stages of formulation and requirements for them in a new way.
