Abstract. The author draws a historical analogy between the Olympic Games and the sport competitions - public merrymaking, which was held within the territory of the Great Steppe in the Middle Ages. The Erd Public Merrymaking is a little-studied page of the history of the people living in the Lake Baikal region and united by their origin. The author stands up for the integrity of the ethical bases and religious and moral sense of this tradition - worshipping gods, the manifestation of human abilities, moral courage, the purity of actions and thoughts of the whole nation. Morality, being the universal basis of people’s mythological world outlook, was represented in the moral conception of the public merrymaking of the Central Asian people.
